The Collaborative Creativity Group of UNU-MERIT has a proven track on excellence in the area of open education, free/open source software, and socio-economics and policy aspects related to those domains. An initial focus of the CCG group has been on Free / Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS), the underlying principles with regards to production principles, governance, community dynamics, educational aspects from user, developer, or provider perspective, as well as sustainability and business models or societal impacts.

CCG is the coordinator of the currently FP7 funded FLOSSINCLUDE project and was also the coordinator and lead author of the FLOSS project (FP5 IST programme), the first comprehensive empirical study of the use, development and policy of free/open source software, worldwide, and the FP6 IST FLOSSPOLS project.

Over the past years CCG has been further become a key player within the area of open education, starting initially by drawing on the open educational findings obtained through the earlier FLOSS projects. Recent activities include the EU funded FLOSSCom project, the EU funded openSE & openEd 2.0 projects, third party funded studies on Wikipedia, or the United Nations University’s own commitment to OCW (Open Course Ware) projects and to OER (Open Educational Resources).
