  3.     Volunteers and Peers

Depending on the group the type of facilitation provided might vary, with this guide aimed at considering all of those types.

1. Course Environment and tools

Facilitators should become familiar with the course environment and tools. The learner guides provide all relevant information and are therefore of equal importance for facilitators. Facilitators are therefore advised to study the Learner Guides !!!

2. Module facilitation

For each of the modules for which you agreed to take on the role of a facilitator the overall objective is to actively assist and steer the modules from pre-start till end.

More precisely we ask you for the following:

2.1 Prior to the module start

  • 1. Make sure you are set as a moderator for your module within the openEd 2.0 forum.
  • 2. Make sure that all module related information, start/ending dates, assignments, etc. are correct and known by you.
  • 3. Make a plan for the synchronous sessions you intend to run. As for the moment we mainly use Chat / IRC, but you are invited to use any additional tools you consider to be suitable.
  • 4. Inform your students over the Forums AND Timetable about times, places and purpose of synchronous meetings. Why double posting? Well, the timetable provides users with a quick overview of all ongoing actions and across modules, the module board at the forum allows users to find targeted information on the modules they take.

2.2 During your module

  • 1. Welcome your students & introduce them to the Learner Guides as well as introducing them to the subject of your module.
  • 2. Guide the learner in the execution of the module and highlight the activities and assignments the learners are expected to perform.
  • 3. Facilitate the students’ work and provide support in accordance with the peer-support principles.
  • 4. Remind students of the submission of assignments.
  • 5. Stimulate & encourage students to provide peer-feedbacks on assignments submitted.

2.3 At the end of your module

  • 1. Provide a wrap-up of your module.
  • 2. Remind students to upload all of the assignments.

2.4 At any point: technical queries & design defect

1. In the case you encounter any technical & design defects, please post those immediately to the Technical & General Support board.

3. Course wide facilitation

You are equally invited to provide support at a course level, including for example:

  • 1. Provide support on questions regarding technical & design defects that are posted to the Technical & General Support board.
  • 2. Evaluate the overall course, to develop it further and to participate at the planning of future course rounds.
  • 3. To help in the localization and improvement of the course and its modules.
  • 4. To get in touch with the course team and other facilitators be also invited to visit the Facilitator Board.

4. Marked Assessment and Certification (for extra service provider)

  • 1. If you are offering marked assessment then please assess the assignments based upon the assessment criteria outlined within each of the modules
  • 2. The dialogues of a learner within the module boards at the forum can further help you to evaluate the learning outcome of a learner
  • 3. We kindly ask you to use the “Submit Review” function and to provide the evaluation of an assignment within the Assignments Zone. With this your evaluation would be available also for other learners so that they could learn from it.
  • 4. Certification: you are free in using either your own templates or the openEd partnership template to provide learners with a certification. It is your free choice!

Still anything unclear or missing? Then please contact us at the Facilitator Board!
